Notes and Observations:
The laptop will boot and use the external monitor or the LCD. The laptop will boot to dual mode, but will not switch to only the LCD or to only the external monitor with the FN key.
The Intel AD1981 HD sound codec was not functional on this model at this time. RedHat will update their driver soon to enable this device.
On installation RedHat loads the SMP version of the kernel which causes the system to appear to hang at “Initializing Hardware… Storage network” message
in the boot process, but after about 20 minutes it will complete the boot process. The corrective action is listed below. The network and audio systems
were not working at this point, but were functional after changing grub to boot the uniprocessor version of the kernel.
To correct these troubles, open a terminal or xterm window, 'cd' to /boot/grub and edit the grub.conf file. Remove the following lines:
title Red Hat Enterprise Linux WS (2.6.9-22.0.2.ELsmp)
root (hd0,1)
kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.9-22.0.2.ELsmp ro root=LABEL=/ rhgb quiet
initrd /initrd-2.6.9-22.0.2.ELsmp.img
Be very sure to leave the following lines as they are required to load the uniprocessor kernel (without any similar lines your computer will not boot!)
title Red Hat Enterprise Linux WS (2.6.9-22.0.2.EL)
root (hd0,1)
kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.9-22.0.2.EL ro root=LABEL=/ rhgb quiet
initrd /initrd-2.6.9-22.0.2.EL.img
RedHat detects the wireless card as eth1 but LAN connectivity is not functional.
Currently RedHat does not handle some models of dual core processors correctly, this notebook contains such a processor.
Rather than use the SMP version of the kernel it is recommended that you
select the Uni-processor version. You can do this by hitting the enter key
when you first see the linux prompt, and selecting the second non-SPM
option. We recommend that after you complete the boot process you edit the
grub.config file located in /boot/grub/. You will notice that there are two
sections of code near the bottom of the file of three or four lines each,
move the second group (the uni-processor kernel) above the first (the SMP
kernel). This will then automatically select the non-SMP kernel by default
in the future.
