    Notes and Observations:

    1. Download the following 4 ALSA packages from the ALSA Sound project. Get the 1.0.10+ packages.
Older ones will not work. (the URL as of today is: http://www.alsa-project.org/ )

    alsa-lib
    alsa-drivers
    alsa-utils
    alsa-oss

    2. Unpack and install all packages in the order alsa-lib, alsa-drivers, alsa-utils, alsa-oss.
They are standard ./configure, make, make install type packages.

    3. Reboot to get rid of the old broken stuff that was loaded.

    4. Run alsamixer. Umute -everything- and raise the volume to a level where you can hear it.
It is utterly important is to unmute -master mono-, -wave-, and -master stereo- to get any sound at all.
(Note: I just used the RedHat sound control and it worked fine after reboot)

    5. Now you can play sounds back, and the X mixer should work.
