The Avocent CPS1610 is a sixteen-port serial console server.

This document covers the setup and testing of the Avocent CPS1610 console server unit in the context of a Linux environment. The testing attempts to ensure that the unit will function as advertised when used with the Linux OS.

All testing of the CPS1610 console server was done in a mixed OS environment.

Other Hardware

Video Monitor: Dell UtlraScan P780 color monitor
Mouse: IBM PS/2 mouse
Keyboard: IBM standard keyboard CPU 1, Generic Pentium IV 2.4GHz, 512 MB RAM, 40 GB hard drive for Linux distributions.

Testing Results

The following table provides the pass/fail result for the hardware as tested in this system by AppLabs.

Connections and Setup
Install Linux on one or more CPUs and access machines through the CPS1610 console server.PASS
Notes: All four distributions worked after systems were configured to use their serial port as the console.

Multiple Systems Verification
Verify that multiple systems can be acessed via telnet.PASS
Notes: All distributions tested were avaliable.

Large Data Transfer
Send and receive large (10MB+) files and compare their contents.PASS
Notes: All files were sent and received without errors through an ftp connection.

System Stability
Verify the systems are accessable after rebooting the systems.PASS
Notes: Boot loader menu must be defaulted to output console to the serial port.

With Microsoft Windows 2000
Verify the continued functionality of the connected CPUs when running different operating systems on one or more of the connected CPUsPASS
Notes: The console server showed no adverse effects when switched between the various OSes and remained functional.

Notes and Observations:

While the CPS1610 unit was tested, the manufacturer identified the eight-port model CPS810 as being identical to the sixteen-port model CPS1610, except for the number of ports.
